Bernadette's Art
Born in Nashville TN with Down Syndrome, Bernadette has become well known in the art community worldwide. Her exposure to the art world and culture started as a child attending as many art galleries, museums, concert halls and plays as her time would allow. From an early age she was encouraged to draw and color in her own style as a form of expression and therapy. This has resulted in a body of work which documents an artist developing a unique style entirely her own. With an artist grandmother and a mother fully committed to allowing her to use this medium of self expression for as far as she would care to take it, Bernadette now exhibits in numerous art galleries, art and craft shows throughout south east and attends many conventions throughout the United States showing and selling her work.

Frist Center Reception
On May 17 there was a reception for those of us who were participating in the exhibit called "The Artist's Voice" at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. This is an exhibition featuring Tennessee artists with disabilities. It is really an honor for me to be part of this exhibition because there were only 40 of us who were chosen from the whole state of Tennessee.
My family and I walked in and never made it to the main reception room. There was a huge crowd of people in the area where we walked in and I kept getting stopped to have my picture taken with my painting or someone wanted to talk to me. It was really exciting. Many people have emailed me that they have enjoyed seeing my painting "The Tulip".
TPAC exhibit
Thursday morning my parents picked me up and we went to TPAC to set up my exhibit. This is a solo show and it really does look nice. I took 17 of my giclees and hung most of them on the wall, but put a few in a cabinet. All of my paintings are colorful so this exhibit will really stand out. Here are some of the giclees that I took for this exhibit.

Frist Center for Visual Arts
The Frist Center is my second gallery this year. This is my sixth gallery since I started painting. In this gallery I am exhibiting my original painting "The Tulip". This exhibit will run May through September. Last year "The Tulip" received third place in a contest. I was very excited about that award. Below is the painting of "The Tulip"

The purpose of the exhibit at the Frist Center is to show that people with disibilities have talent. Many people with disibilities from all over the state of Tennessee submitted pictures of their work, but only about 40 of us were selected so this is a great honor to have a painting in this exhibit. Unlike what many people think, people with disabilities can be very talented. Some of the work that will be at this show is outstanding and makes my work look like what a preschooler would do.
I hope some of you will be able to visit the Frist Center and see this exhibit in the
Conte Community Arts Gallery.
