Local Businesses are Beating Global Competition

posted by lbb_mike on Feb 17th, 2007 at 10:22 am
Author of The Small-Mart Revolution and Going Local, Michael Schuman explains how local businesses are beating global competition and helping to create self-reliant communities. Citing the localization trends that are emerging in the markets today, Schuman says the outlook is positive for local economies. He also suggests the possibility of local stock exchanges and global networks of local businesses.

More highlights from the interview:

•58% of our economy is rooted in local businesses that are focused on local markets
•Over the last 10 years, local businesses have lost only 3% of their market share to non-local businesses
•Local economies are relationship driven, involving people and the environment
•Local business owners spend more money locally and contribute much more to local economic well being
•Rising fuel costs lend an advantage to producing and distributing goods locally
