Bay Area Local Food Guide Debuts at Jack London Farmers' Market

Local Food at Jack London Square Farmers' Market in Oakland California

In an effort to support local farmers and our local economy, my fiance and I have switched to buying most of our produce at farmers' markets instead of buying imported fruits and vegetables from the grocery store. We get amazing seasonal produce for the same price or lower. And the producers get a fair return on their hard work because there is no middlemen. It works out well for both parties, and the local economy.

This weekend we went to the farmers' market at Jack London Square in Oakland (our usual Sunday produce stop) for a special brunch celebrating the release of The Bay Area Local Food Guide. Created by Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), the guide is a listing of family farms, farmers' markets, restaurants, grocers and caterers that sell locally grown food. The guide covers the Bay Area's nine-county region of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, Sam Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma. It also includes a comprehensive listing of farmers' market locations and a chart showing seasonal availability of produce grown in California.

The brunch featured food from local farms and local vendors. Some of the vendors were Fra Mani Handcrafted Salumi, Sweet Adeline Bakeshop, and Karin Johnson Specialty Cakes & Pastries. It was delicious!

Program Manager Temra Costa says they have plenty of the new guides in stock. Contact CAFF to get a copy, or save a tree by using the online version. CAFF's next event is at the Brentwood Farmers' Market on Saturday June 23rd.
