Keep Up With the Buzz: Topic Resources for Your Blog
Not sure what to write about? Keep up with industry or local buzz and you'll find the inspiration you need. here are three easy-to-use web-based resources that will keep you in the know:
1. Search other blogs
No, you shouldn't plagiarize anyone's work, but there's no harm in gleaning a little inspiration from someone else's great post...and blogging about it!
There are tens of millions of blogs, so sifting through the blogosphere for relevant ones can be daunting. Two of my favorite tools for blog searches are Google Blog Search and Technorati. They each offer different features for sorting and categorizing search results. Google Blog Search is as easy to use as Google's web search. Simply type in a search term, and Google will fetch all blog posts containing that keyword. You can sort the results by date, which is helpful when you want the most current information on your topic. Technorati, on the other hand, sorts search results by "authority", the measure of how many inbound links a certain blog has. In other words, the most popular blogs will be at the top of your search results.
2. News
Local, industry-specific and even national news can be a rich resource for your blog.
Topix.net allows users to sort news by location. This is especially useful for neighborhood businesses looking to stay informed on the latest happenings in their community. Also check out your local television news' website for local coverage.
For nation-wide news coverage, try Google News, CNN.com, The Onion, or your favorite independent news source.
3.Google Alerts
You will find Google Alerts to be an effortless, invaluable resource. Google will email you every time it crawls a certain keyword (specified by you, of course). For instance, a fitness expert wanting to stay informed on "functional training" could choose to be alerted monthly, weekly, daily, or the instant Google crawls that keyword, whether it's on a blog or news website. Arranging a Google Alert for keywords relevant to your blog means you spend less time searching for keywords and can devote more time to blogging.
