Oxford Makes Locavore Word Of The Year

posted by lbb_mike on Dec 10th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Lovers of locally grown and locally produced foods now have an official place in the American vocabulary. The New Oxford American dictionary has chosen 'Locavore' as its Word of the Year.

Locavores encourage people to buy food from farmers' markets and local sources. Growing your own food would make you a Locavore de Ultimate, at least in my book. Advantages to eating locally include: freshness, taste, nutrition, purity, and many pros for the environment. And it makes economic sense because local food travels less (think rising fuel costs) and supporting local producers strengthens your community's economic health.

Sustainability is key to the locavore concept. Self-reliant communities have better food security in times of shortages, and often have more influence on how their food is grown. Globalization has gotten people used to the idea that food can come from anywhere. This notion is what has disconnected us from our farmers and local food producers. $100+ oil, which many are predicting for next year, will increase food transportation costs and may be the tipping point for local food.
