St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church

Serbian Orthodox Church, Merrillville, IN, was established in 1914 in Gary, IN. Divine Liturgy Sundays 10am, Fr. Marko Matic officiating; formerly served by Very Rev. Jovan Todorovich, retired after 36 years. Liturgical responses by Karageorge Choir. Sunday School starts 9:45am. in the new St. Sava Learning Center. Serbian School starts at 12:30 during 8-week sessions. Vespers served Tuesdays and Saturdays at 6:00 p.m. Join us, everyone welcome! Folklore dance group and choir always accepting new members. Attend Sunday Luncheons after Liturgy, hosted by families or organizations, serving delicious homemade food and desserts.

October Recipes: Beef Roll-Ups, Kocke Od Cokolade

BEEF ROLL-UPS

  • 1 1/2 Cups herb-seasoned or plain stuffing
  • 1 1/2 Lb. thinly sliced round steak (1/4 inch thick)
  • 2 Tablespoons shortening
  • 1 Can mushroom or cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/4 - 1/3 Cup water

Prepare stuffing as directed on package. Cut steak into 6 pieces (6 X 4 inches), pound, then place about 1/4 cup stuffing near center of each piece of steak. Starting at narrow end, roll up. Tuck in ends; fasten with toothpicks or skewers. In skillet, brown Roll-Ups in shortening; pour off fat. Stir in soup and water; cover and cook over low heat 1 hour or until done. Stir occasionally. Makes 6 servings.


KOCKE OD COKOLADE (Chocolate Cookies)

  • 12 Oz. butter, creamed
  • 1 3/4 Cups sugar
  • 6 Egg yolks
  • 4 Oz. grated chocolate
  • 1 1/3 Cups Flour

Mix everything together; add 6 well-beaten egg whites. Pour in 9 X 13 pan, and top with chopped nuts. Bake 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Cut with doughnut cutter or glass in form of half-moons.
