posted by dorothyp on Feb 10th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

It's time to dig out those Nike's and get in the mood for basketball. The 2008 SNF Basketball Tournament will be hosted by our friends at St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Merrillville on May 30, 31, and June 1st. Practices will be held from 1:00pm til 2:30pm every Sunday starting March 30th at the Crown Point High School Field House. The only requirement is to make sure your child has membership in the Serbian National Federation by February 29th. (This deadline has been extended.) Contact Eli Roknich at 942-6377 for an application and rates, or see him after church in the south wing.

Returning players and new players are all welcome, just come on down to practice, and we'll find a place for you. Teams are for all age groups, boys and girls, wee-wee through adult. Contact Lou Stefanovic for additional information or to volunteer to help at (219)226-1567. Remember the wonderful time the children had last year and how well they all played. This is an opportunity for them to make new friendships with Serbian children from around the country.

SNF Tournament Draws Thousands for Fun Filled Weekend

posted by jgdevaney on May 22nd, 2007 at 11:41 am
The tournament was a huge success! Thousands of people came from across the country (anyone have a head count?) - lots of food, music and dancing. It was a blast! Thanks to all the teams and their families, and to everyone who pitched in to make this event memorable.

St. Sava last hosted the event 40 years ago in 1967. And we were happy to host this year's 68th annual basketball tournament. We'll see everyone next year at St. Elijah for another weekend of fun.

Photos are starting to make it to our inbox. We will be posting them as they come in, so check back throughout the week. Send your photos and videos to stsavachurch AT gmail DOT com. Also, professional photos will be posted soon and prints will be available for purchase.

SNF Basketball Tournament

posted by jgdevaney on Mar 20th, 2007 at 3:07 pm

SNF King Peter Lodge #16 and St. Sava of Merrillville -
Proud Hosts of the 68th Annual SNF Basketball Tournament

The committee from St. Sava Church in Merrillville is working overtime to make this year’s basketball tournament an unforgettable event. Weekly meetings are held to assign jobs, order food, drinks, id’s, tickets – all that is entailed in ensuring that the competitions go smoothly, that everyone is well fed and that all our guests are provided with the kind of hospitality for which Serbians everywhere are commended.

The hotels are being booked through the Lake County Convention and Visitors Bureau through their website at www.lakecountycvb.com/housing. All hotel reservations must be booked through this website to ensure the reduced rates for rooms.

The hotels/motels are surrounded by great shopping and dining for those who have time between games or who just want to spend some “non-basketball time” unwinding before departing for the hall in Hobart. For all the shoppers , just a minute or two from the main hotels is the Westfield Mall, Target, TJ Maxx and a multitude of other shopping spots as well as many restaurants, book stores, and theaters.

Our doors will be open Thursday night to welcome all players, coaches, and managers for registration and any guests who wish to join us for a casual get-together at our hall. There will be tambura music in the bar and light dinners will be available for travelers.

Our kolo sisters are putting together some delicious home-cooked meals to be served at the hall from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. every night. Fresh cooked lamb will be available on Saturday afternoon and every night the menu will feature grilled cevaps.

The games will be played at “The Courts” in Chesterton, IN – a new facility which can accommodate upwards of 75 games per day. Chesterton is only a 20 minute ride from the hotels and motels in Merrillville and is easily accessible from the expressway which is just a few seconds from the main hotels. Sunday’s final games will be held at Wheeler High School, a short ride just east of the hotels. Saturday evening the trophy presentations will be held at the hall for the Wee Wee’s, Pee Wee’s and Juniors. Trophy presentations on Sunday will follow each of the three scheduled games.

If you like Serbian music – and we certainly hope you do! – we have plenty. Sumadija for dancing Friday and Saturday, Mismo, T Roma and Prazna Flasa for barroom music. We have arcade games planned for the younger crowd, a video room for the Wee Wee crowd, and a pop bar just for the younger kids. Shuttle buses will run from the Radisson Hotel to the hall on Friday and Saturday nights from 7 p.m. to midnight.

There are still trophy sponsorships available and there is always room for more ads in the ad book. Anyone wishing to sponsor a trophy or who would like an ad or a booster ad in the souvenir book, please contact the St. Sava Church office at (219) 736-9191.

Come to Merrillville May 17 – 20, 2007. A good time awaits you.
