Photos - Plaque Dedicated, Parastos for Mile & Ella Kosanovic, Milan Opacich
The Serbian Historical Society presented a plaque to the church board commemorating the couple who blessed this church with a million dollar gift. Mile and Ella also bought the main bell for the church, paid for the monument dedicated to all Serbs who served and were victims of all previous wars. He labored tirelessly to help build this church along with many others who have since passed. He also served up "vruca rakija" every Badnje Vece. The plaque was the suggestion of Historical Society member George Skrivan, himself a large donor, and designed by Paul Jancarich. Look for this plaque where it will be permanently displayed in the north wing. Fr. Marko held Parastos for Mile (5 years) and Ella (4 years) Kosanovic and also for Milan Opacich's 40 Day Memorial. Milan's daughter Karin paid tribute to her father's memory, and hinted to a biography in the works. Luncheon Buffet was hosted by the Historical Society, and tables were decorated in Milan's favorite wine theme, Opolo wine, made by his dear Serbian friend Rick Quinn of Opolo Vineyards in Paso Robles, California. Proceeds from the luncheon will be used toward the purchase of blinds for the south wing's many windows.

Photos - Kolo Annual Christmas Party at Innsbrook Country Club
The hard working ladies of the Serbian Sisters Circle let someone else do the cooking as they celebrated the Holiday Season Saturday afternoon. Poetry, Christmas stories, games, and songs were all part of the program. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and friends laughed until they had tears in their eyes when Olga Galich Velasquez lead the Kolo Chorus in "The Twelve Days of Christmas". "Kolo Men" Simo Glumac and Richard Vrtikapa were thanked for all their help during the past year, and first time inductee Paul Jancarich was presented with his own pair of rubber gloves, apron, and bottle of Palmolive dish soap. "Youngest" Kolo member Karavelka Petrovich (well into her 100's) was honored with a bouquet of fresh flowers by Alexis Orlich. Kolo President Beba Rudman also had a special gift for Donna Nicolich - her very own Chef's hat! Special thanks to Kathy Vrtikapa Friedlander and her daughter Susan, who traveled from Indianapolis to coordinate the party activities and games. Please join us next year and be sure to invite a friend!

Serbian Sisters Circle Kolo Slava St. Petka Will Be Celebrated Sunday, October 25
Please join the Kolo Sisters on Sunday, October 25th as they celebrate their Slava after Divine Liturgy. Blessing of the kolach and koljivo will precede the luncheon. On the actual Slava day, October 27th, the sisters will read the names of all deceased members, a tradition of remembrance for all our mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and kumas. Please make every effort to attend both services.

Our Venerable Mother Petka-Paraskeva, as she became known, was born in the 11th century in the city of Epivat, which is between Silivria and Constantinople. Her parents were very religious and raised their children to be pious. After her parents died, St. Petka strictly devoted herself to the monastic life, and with fasting and prayer, she committed her life to God. After five years of fasting and prayer, she went to the Holy Land (Palestine) to live in the desert of Jordan. In her old age, she returned to Constantinople to the Church of Holy Theotokos in Blaherna to revere the miraculous icon of the Mother of God.
Two centuries after her death (1238 A.D.), the Bulgarian emperor John Asen decided to move St. Petka's relics from Epivat, which then was under the Crusader's control, to Trnovo, the capital of Bulgaria. After the Turkish occupation of Bulgaria, the relics were moved again--this time to Vidim on the Danube (Vlaska). In 1396 when the Turks also conquered this area, the Serbian princess Milica acted to bring the holy relics to Belgrade. In 1417 the Church of St. Petka was built in Belgrade and her holy relics were placed there. In 1521 after the mighty Sulleyman II conquered Belgrade, St. Petka's remains, along with many Serbian families, were moved to Constantinople. There her remains were received with great respect and solemnity and the Sultan brought them to his castle. Numerous miracles occurred there, which caused the holy Mother Petka-Paraskeva also to be worshipped by Muslims. In 1641, with permission from Constantinople's patriarch Partenije I, the pious Moldavian ruler Vasilije Lupul brought St. Petka's remains to Moldavia's capital, Jash, where on 14/27 October they were placed in the church of the Three Holy Hierarchs, where St. Petka's holy relics continued to glorify the Lord with wonders and miracles.
